EFL Community Weekends is a key moment in the season where all 72 Clubs across the EFL celebrate the impact football Clubs and their Community Heroes have on people's lives. Community Heroes show how the power of football makes a real difference to people in their communities through innovative programmes and initiatives that are inspiring and impacting communities across England and Wales.
More than ever, football Clubs are called upon to provide life-changing support to fans and local people, transcending far beyond the pitch - more than one million people engaged in EFL Club community work last season.
This season's community heroes showcase the life-changing impact of Cardiff City FC Community Foundation. Once beneficiaries, they are now ambassadors, inspiring others through passion, determination, and support.
CHANGING LIVES, TRANSFORMING COMMUNITIES.
GRACE EVANS
Grace, a dedicated individual with a passion for football, showcases show Cardiff City FC Community Foundation’s post-16 education pathway can change lives. Grace joined the Foundation’s BTEC Level 3 course at the age of 16, driven by her ambition to grow both on and off the pitch. Over the years, she not only completed the course but progressed to university level to study football coaching, while playing professionally for the Cardiff City FC's Women's First Team.
Her hard work and commitment paid off when she became a paid member of Community Foundation staff, allowing her to carry out football coaching in local primary schools and Cardiff City FC Soccer Schools. Grace also joined the coaching team at the Football Club’s Advanced Development Centres (ADC), showcasing her growing expertise and reputation in the industry. She has since become a highly respected coach, aiming to break into Academy football.
Grace also expertly hosted our Annual Impact celebration event, interviewing our beneficiaries in front of stakeholders, guests and funders. Her journey with the Foundation is a perfect example of how dedication can transform passion into a career, benefiting both her personal development and the community around her.
MIKE JEFFERY
Ex Armed forces Personnel, Mike, plays a vital role in running the Cardiff City FC Veterans Hub, a social isolation project aimed at supporting armed forces veterans, many of whom face mental health challenges and loneliness. Through the hub, Mike connects veterans with each other and with their families, offering a much-needed support network. The hub’s activities include online check-ins, regular face-to-face meetings at Cardiff City Stadium, and maintenance of the club’s Memorial Garden.
Recently, Mike has expanded his reach and influence in the Foundation by coordinating the “Head in the Game” programme, a 12-week initiative that supports young people to develop positive behaviours and attitudes. Mike’s tireless dedication and leadership make him an invaluable asset to the Foundation, enhancing both the well-being of veterans and young people in the community.
Next season, Mike has also offered his expertise on the Duke of Edinburgh qualification, being offered on our level 2 and 3 sport courses, next year.
STEPHANIE MAY
Before joining the FIT Bluebirds programme, Stephanie was struggling with PTSD, facing mental health challenges while managing personal life events. The free 12-week programme offered by Cardiff City FC Community Foundation provided a safe and supportive space where she could learn about healthy lifestyles, improve her physical well-being, and work on her mental health.
Through the programme, Stephanie learned vital skills in areas like nutrition, exercise, and managing stress. As the weeks passed, she developed healthier habits and a renewed perspective on her life and health. FIT Bluebirds became a turning point in her journey, providing her with the tools and confidence to move forward.
Since joining our team, Steph discovered a late adult diagnosis of autism, which deepened her interest and education in neurodiversity. She has also played a key role in supporting Cardiff City’s Sensory Room. Last year, Steph also took on the Cardiff City Stadium Abseil, raising vital funds for our charity.
Now, she gives back by volunteering with the Community Foundation, coordinating our dementia friendly 1927 Club, and bravely sharing her inspiring story at our annual Impact Celebration event.
CAMERON MAIDMENT
Rooney’s journey with Cardiff City FC Community Foundation began when he joined our outreach football sessions as in his local community as a participant, which provide young people aged 11-18 with access to free football activities. Over time, Rooney became more involved with the Community Foundation, gaining support and guidance to progress into college from site staff.
Rooney has now become a volunteer with the Foundation, giving back to the community that once supported him. As a role model for young people in Ebbw Vale, he works alongside site staff each week, helping to deliver sessions and inspire others. He has also travelled with the team to tournaments, supporting delivery against other community club organisations, and has contributed to local grassroots football as a coach.
The Ebbw Vale session has become a vital pillar of the community, building cohesion and creating opportunities for friendships and meaningful social connections. Rooney’s passion, warmth, and dedication have left a lasting impact, ensuring those around him feel valued, supported, and motivated.
Rooney’s journey continues as the Foundation invests in his future to help him progress even further.
Join us at the Burnley fixture on March 4th at Cardiff City Stadium as we celebrate our community heroes! They’ll take to the centre circle alongside the squad, so be sure to give them a well-deserved round of applause for their incredible hard work.
