Young people from Ebbw Vale represent Cardiff City in Premier League Kicks Cup

08 August 2023

Beneficiaries from Cardiff City FC Community Foundation’s Premier League Kicks site in Ebbw Vale travelled to Warwick University’s Cryfield Sports Pavilion last month to take part in the Under-16 mixed Premier League Kicks Cup.

Following their success earlier this year, where they lifted the regional title trophy in Bristol, the team from our Ebbw Vale Premier League Kicks Site were joined by 150 other young people from across England and Wales in a bid to lift the 2023 Premier League Kicks Cup trophy.

On the day there were competitive fixtures against teams from AFC Bournemouth, Colchester United, Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town. Our team put in an incredible performance, pushing until the final minute of each game and finishing fourth in their group.

The tournament offered many of the young team the experience of travelling outside of Wales and their community for the first time and allowed them to socialise and play against other young people from Clubs across the country.

Jamie Thomas, Community Outreach Coordinator at Cardiff City FC Community Foundation said;

“I’d like to thank The Premier League Charitable Fund for creating a memorable day for our beneficiaries. It provided opportunities and experiences that will last a lifetime but has also supported the personal development and growth of our young people both on and off the football pitch.
The boys should be proud of how they represented themselves, their families, Cardiff City FC Community Foundation and the Football Club both on and off the field”.

Cardiff City FC Community Foundation’s project inclusion staff, Darren Davies and Matthew Griffiths have played a key part in supporting and developing these opportunities for young people across the Blaenau Gwent Community. Reaching the PL Kicks Finals for the first time is a testament and reflection of their hard work over the last few seasons.

In the last 12 months, Cardiff City FC Community Foundation has delivered 626 Premier League Kicks sessions across 7 local authorities, including Cardiff, Blaenau Gwent, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Merthyr, Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend & Caerphilly with over 1500 young people taking part.

Premier League Kicks is the Premier League’s flagship community programme, which sees more than 90 clubs across England and Wales run free weekly football sessions and positive activities to engage and support young people aged 11-19.
