Virtual Challenge Helps Local Charity Raise Over £4,000

05 September 2025

Throughout August, Community Foundation supporters took on our 5k a Day virtual challenge - covering 5km every day over the course of the month.

Whether running, walking, swimming or cycling, 26 fantastic fundraisers clocked up the kilometres, covering over 4,000km combined throughout the month. That’s like travelling from Cardiff City Stadium to Bradford City’s Valley Parade, the home of our furthest League One rivals, and back over five times!

Our brilliant fundraisers have collectively raised an incredible over £4,000!

Liz Dawson, fundraiser and Cardiff City supporter took on the challenge this August. For Liz, it was the perfect way to stay active while caring for teenage son Oli, who recently underwent a major foot operation. Through health challenges and personal struggles, matchdays at Cardiff City Stadium have given them joy and distraction - a connection that led Liz to the Foundation’s virtual fundraising initiative.

One programme in particular struck a chord – the 1927 Club, a social hub hosted at the home of Cardiff City Football Club for individuals living with dementia. Earlier this year, Liz sadly lost her mum to dementia, making the cause deeply personal.

Inspired by her mum’s memory, and motivated by Oli’s ongoing health journey, Liz committed to the challenge – raising over £700!

Elaine Howe, a local fundraiser just a stone’s throw from the football ground, enjoyed the challenge so much that she has continued her health and wellbeing journey by keeping up her 5k walks over the weekend.

Jason Crimmins, fundraiser and Retail Manager at Cardiff City Stadium, said:

“Since Christmas I've lost 4 and a half stone and thought the challenge would be a good chance to keep the weight off and raise some money for the Foundation. I've been a Cardiff City FC fan since the age of 4 and I've worked at the club for the past 10 years, so I know what an incredible job the Foundation does”

We’re so grateful to everyone who stepped up to take on the challenge and raise money. All funds raised from the challenge will go directly towards our work to continue supporting people in our communities.

MEET THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE IMPACT.

This includes people like brother and sister, Sarok and Wareen, who arrived in the UK from Iraq and began attending Windsor Clive Primary School in October 2024. Both being quiet and shy pupils, Sarok and Wareen found it challenging to settle and adjust to a new school in an unfamiliar country. With the our primary education provision, we were able to implement a physical element to their learning experience to increase their participation and confidence.
