Evan's Story

how evan developed game-changing life skills to set him up for success.

After struggling to engage in a mainstream school environment, Evan transitioned to the Foundation's Junior Apprenticeship (JA) programme in September 2024. Diagnosed with ADHD and navigating family separation at home, Evan found it difficult to focus in class and was easily distracted by external factors.

His struggles with managing emotions led to recurring outbursts, requiring additional support and attention during school hours. As a result, Evan lost motivation, struggled to find enjoyment in his core subjects, and his attendance dropped significantly.

Traditional school settings had failed to engage Evan, but since joining the Foundation, his outlook has changed. Launched in partnership with Cardiff and Vale College, the JA programme offers 14–16-year-olds the chance to gain skills and qualifications in football coaching and sports-related industries.

Since enrolling, Evan has become a valued member of the class. His attendance is consistent, and he now applies himself to studying the BTEC Level 1 qualification in Sport, excelling particularly in practical lessons.

Thanks to the support of his mentor, James Bloom, Evan has found a role model. James' patience, warmth, and encouragement have been key to Evan's improved attendance and engagement. James provides a relaxed learning environment, with a smaller class size that gives Evan the timely and personalised support he needs to succeed.

ONE GOAL AT A TIME.

Working closely with our Secondary Education Coordinator, Ross Branson, tailored support systems have been put in place to help Evan manage his emotions and outbursts. Through tailored anger management strategies and regular physical activity, Evan is learning to manage frustration and remain focused. When feeling stressed or overwhelmed, he is now supported with the flexibility to take breaks when needed, helping him to regulate his emotions.

Futsal has been a key tool in helping Evan re-engage with learning. As an exciting, fast-paced, small-sided football game, Futsal provides regular physical activity that breaks up classroom lessons. The game also allows Evan to release excess energy, helping him to stay on track in his learning.

Through this, Evan has also found a passion for fitness and wellbeing. James' lessons on exercise and fitness have even encouraged him to take up gym training, providing an outlet to manage stress and improve his mental health outside the classroom.

CHANGING LIVES, TRANSFORMING COMMUNITIES.

Recently, Evan was rewarded for his progress and invited to Community Foundation Day, a celebration of the Foundation’s work and impact on a match-day. He attended a Cardiff City FC home fixture against Plymouth Argyle, where he had the unforgettable experience of taking a penalty at halftime.

For the first time in his education journey, Evan has set clear goals for his future. He now aspires to progress onto the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport course, another pathway offered at the Foundation.

Evan now wants to help other young people facing similar challenges with mainstream education. He’s eager to get involved in the Foundation’s community and outreach projects, using his own experiences to inspire and guide others—just as James has done for him.
