Alex's Story

Alex’s Road to Opportunity

Alex joined the Cardiff City FC Community Foundation in September 2022, beginning his journey on the BTEC Level 2 qualification in sport. Having transitioned from Cardiff West High School, Alex faced significant challenges, including leaving school with no GCSEs and minimal attendance, averaging just 1-2 days per week.

Despite these initial struggles, Alex finished the 2022/23 academic year with an impressive 90% attendance rate. Through his commitment and the support of the Foundation tutors, he successfully completed his BTEC Level 2 and chose to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 qualification.

Traditional school settings did not appeal to Alex. In high school, he struggled with motivation to attend class and complete his work, resulting in a lack of routine. But the Foundation’s blended learning approach broke this cycle. The further education provision helped Alex develop his skills on the court while receiving tailored academic support in the classroom.

Futsal is used as an engagement tool for learners like Alex, encouraging physical activity while providing a platform for students to express themselves beyond the classroom. Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small-sided football match. The game places a large emphasis on technical skill-and-ability in situations of high pressure.

Through regular futsal sessions, Alex not only developed his social skills but also joined a men’s and youth football team outside of college. These activities enriched his social life and boosted his physical and mental health.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE, ACHIEVING AMBITIONS

Alex is now halfway through his BTEC Level 3 qualification, which is equivalent to three A-levels. During this time, he has secured part-time employment with Cardiff City Football Club at the official store. This was a major milestone for Alex, as he initially lacked the confidence to pursue these opportunities. Alex has also actively participated in student open evenings to inspire potential new students. Upon completing his BTEC Level 3 qualification, Alex aspires to join the army or marines.

Structure has been vital for Alex, helping him prove to himself daily that he can succeed. Thanks to Futsal and personalised support from dedicated staff, he’s established a healthy routine and has stayed motivated with his coursework, helping him to outline his gameplan for a bright future.

Education, Skills & Training Manager, Matthew Pugh said:

"We're incredibly proud of Alex’s progress and development over the last two years.

At the Foundation, we strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment where students like Alex can unlock their full potential.

Through the power of football, Alex has built resilience and confidence and seeing him thrive both in and out of the classroom has been an absolute privilege."

ALEX CHICHESTER SAID:

“If it wasn’t for the Foundation, I wouldn’t be where I am today—both academically and personally. This is the first time I’ve felt motivated to complete my work and am excited about my future. Futsal has really boosted my confidence and helped me stay focused, and I’m so grateful for the opportunities the Community Foundation has given me."

We want to help people develop game changing life skills that will set them up for success.

We’re proud to be able to offer our students a relaxed atmosphere to learn and the opportunity to transfer what they’ve learned in the classroom through structured, practical training sessions
