Evan's Story
Traditional school settings hadn’t worked for Evan, but since joining the Junior Apprenticeship programme and developing a close bond with his Foundation mentor, his outlook on education has now changed.
Zack is a 12-year-old boy who attends our Premier League Inclusive Kicks sessions in Merthyr Tydfil. He faces mobility and developmental challenges and has recently undergone spinal surgery.
Despite these obstacles, Zack has shown remarkable commitment and passion, attending our free football sessions every week. To celebrate his progress, Zack was chosen as a mascot for the Men's First-Team fixture against Rotherham United on Community Foundation Day.
When finding the sessions at Cardiff City FC Community Foundation, Zack's mother, Nadine, shared the difficulties Zack faces due to his mobility barriers, making traditional football participation challenging.
Merthyr Kicks provided a solution, enabling Zack to enjoy football at his own pace while gaining new skills and opportunities for personal development. Most importantly, the praise, support and encouragement from the coaches have also notably boosted Zack's confidence.
These bonds also extend beyond the football sessions, with group activities taking place outside of the sessions such as bowling and dining. They also plan special outings, including Christmas parties, long weekend trips and access to our sensory room at Cardiff City Stadium to watch a Cardiff City FC match.
Darren Davies, Premier League Kicks Coach, has strongly emphasised the sense of togetherness and belonging found within the group and that over time, the sessions have notably helped build strong relationships among the participants, their families, and support workers.
“Zack turns up every week, gives 100% and always has a smile on his face despite his challenges. He is a pleasure to coach and is very popular within the group. I have seen him develop over the past twelve months and has shown so much resilience after his last operation” - Darren Davies.
"This group has been exactly what Zack and us as his parents have been looking for many years. It’s a fantastic group with the most encouraging and supportive coaches that allow our children to be themselves while doing what they love at their own pace. Zack looks forward to each session and has loved feeling part of a team. This group truly is the best!”
Premier League Kicks uses the power of football and sport to inspire young people to reach their potential, in some of the most high-need areas in England and Wales.
