Yesterday, Monday February 24, local Premier League Kicks participants had the exciting opportunity to meet Cardiff City FC Men’s First Team player Matthew Turner who attended their football celebration event in Caerau. The event was also supported by the youth outreach team at Bridgend Council.
Last year, Cardiff City FC Community Foundation launched Caerau Kicks to offer free weekly football sessions at Caerau Primary School to support 10–17-year-olds. Delivered in partnership with South Wales Police, Noddfa Youth Project and Bridgend County Borough Council, the initiative provides young people with a safe and engaging environment to participate in football activities at no cost.
This programme was designed to create opportunities for young people who are at risk of anti-social behaviour, youth violence and/or from high-need areas to regularly engage in sport, mentoring and personal development opportunities.
At the end of the tournament, standout performers had the opportunity to test their skills in a penalty shootout against Turner. The winning team was also presented with a special trophy by Turner in recognition of their achievement.
To thank South Wales Police, Noddfa Youth Project and Bridgend County Borough Council for all their hard work in the area, the Foundation also donated a brand-new set of football goals to the venue, ensuring continued access to football for residents.
South Wales Police Sergeant, Dan Parry said:
“South Wales Police is proud to be part of the Premier League Kicks project. The objectives of the initiative, which includes enhancing physical and mental well-being, promoting volunteering, and providing pathways to education and employment, demonstrate a comprehensive approach to youth development. South Wales Police recognises the programme's potential to guide young people away from anti-social behaviour and towards constructive activities.
This initiative is a great opportunity for the young people of Caerau, and it has provided an opportunity for them to receive top quality coaching from the Foundation’s football coaches at a local venue. With sessions held at Caerau Primary School on Mondays, the programme caters to different age groups, ensuring that a wide range of young people can benefit from its offerings.
A huge thank you to PC Nick Rayner, whose commitment, passion, and enthusiasm have been instrumental in the success of this project. His dedication to the new South Wales Police Youth Engagement role has truly made an impact, ensuring young people feel supported, engaged, and empowered”
Premier League Kicks coordinator at Cardiff City FC Community Foundation, Jamie Thomas said:
“We are incredibly grateful to South Wales Police for their ongoing support and partnership in delivery Premier League Kicks in Caerau. Their dedication to engaging young people through sport and providing a safe environment has been invaluable. This celebration event highlights the positive impact we can create when working together to inspire and support young people in our communities.”
