Cardiff City’s Walking Football team played in their first ever competitive tournament at Swansea City’s Llandarcy Academy of Sport on Thursday.
With 10 players, the Bluebirds were able to field two competitive teams against seasoned opponents.
Both teams made flying starts with wins against Swansea City and Abertillery Rovers. The Bluebird representatives continued in the same vein in the second games, with the first team adding a third victory while the second team lost their final group fixture to Pontypridd.
Both teams met each other in the Semi Final, guaranteeing the Bluebird’s place in their first ever final. The highlight of this game was Alan Armstrong’s calm finish after rounding Martin Pritchard in goal.
In the final, the Bluebirds came up against Pontypridd who had beaten the Bluebirds second team in the group stages. After a tight first 5 minutes Cardiff City Walking Football opened the scoring with a superb team goal. Pontypridd had a number of chances but failed to capitalise before a second goal just before the final whistle sealed the victory for the Bluebirds.
Swansea City’s Club Ambassador, Lee Trundle presented the players with medals and a trophy to end a fantastic day for all involved.
The team hopes to use their success as preparation for their tie against Manchester City in the summer.
