Community Football Coaching and Development
Cardiff City FC Foundation offers a unique opportunity for students to further develop their academic and professional careers through gaining a university level qualification in partnership with the University of South Wales. The course provides an opportunity to gain industry-recognised coaching awards whilst being affiliated with Cardiff City FC.
About The Course
The course has been designed in conjunction with the EFL Trust. It allows you to study all sub disciplines of coaching and football development whilst gaining valuable industry-recognised qualifications. It will teach you aspects of children’s and youth coaching, football coaching, football development, social inclusion and sports management skills.
The degree will be based at Cardiff City Stadium, with lectures, seminars and tutorials delivered on site and material online. There will be further opportunity to apply your knowledge with an extensive work-based learning programme provided by the club, allowing you to work in specific roles and real-life football projects.
The academic programme enables you to gain a level 2 Football Coaching Certificate (pending a final assessment). The course is designed to give you the best opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in all coaching-related and football development disciplines. You will be integrated into the football club and engaged in community coaching and football development opportunities.
You will study all coaching-related disciplines. PE in school sport, community sports development, and extensive work-based learning opportunities will be integrated into your timetable. Specific football coaching modules involve completion of a Level 2 Football Coaching Certificate. You will also have opportunities during your study to gain vocational experience working within Cardiff City FC & Cardiff City FC Foundation.
How You Will Study
You will learn through classroom-based lectures and seminars, as well as practical learning in the field. In the second year, you will complete up to 200 hours of coaching (work based learning) to give you vital skills for a career in youth coaching, and football development.
You will be enrolled as a student at the University of South Wales and have access to online library, virtual learning environments and other learning materials.
Additionally you will spend a minimum of seven days per year at the University of South Wales High Performance Centre – the USW Sport Park, and receive full accommodation during these teaching blocks.
You can enter a number of careers when you graduate, such as community manager, social inclusion officer, women’s and girl’s officer at a professional football club, football development officer, football in the community coach, or sports development officer. You could even enter other careers, such as the armed forces or emergency services.
All applicants must have Level 1 in football coaching or equivalent foundation-level football coaching qualification from a football National Governing Body.
