The Bluebirds competed in Group 3 during the preliminary rounds in which they were drawn against Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and 2014 winners Grimsby Town, against whom City opened.

Following a goalless result in their opening game, City went on to rack up 2-1 and 3-1 victories against Chelsea and Nottingham Forest respectively, which qualified them for the quarter finals against Sheffield United after finishing top of Group 3.

Cardiff City Futsal got off to nothing short of an ideal start, earning themselves a three goal advantage early on. It was a lead that was soon diminished however, as The Blades impressively turned their game around after calling a timeout.

Inside the final minute, Andrew Ellis’ heroic effort seemed to have forced extra time when he pulled back the one goal deficit to level the scores at five-a-piece. Yet, The Blades responded with brilliance when it mattered, and netted the winning goal within the dying moments straight from kick-off to end the game at 6-5 and knock the Bluebirds out of the tournament.

It was a disappointing end for the U18s, who ended their season top of the Football League Trust Futsal League South Midlands Division; and despite having exited the tournament before the semi-finals, the boys were awarded their Champion’s Trophy at the arena on Wednesday.

Congratulations to Reading FC who were overall winners of the tournament.
